Rebirth of a Hometown

Jackson, Mississippi is my home. I was born within the city limits, and I have lived within 10 miles of its city limits for most of my life. It is the largest city in Mississippi and is by far the most problem plagued of all Mississippi cities. I can honestly say that Jackson is slowly fixing some of its many issues; it is becoming something I think we can all be proud of. It starts with the downtown, and the once dormant and dead King Edward Hotel, and it will radiate out.

When I was walking downtown two days ago, and I visited the King Edward; it was starting. Many of the abandoned buildings surrounding the King Edward were undergoing construction, they are being rebuilt. I’m not sure what it will lead to; I sincerely hope it will lead to a downtown similar to what was there in the 60’s, a thriving shopping center full of restaurants and stores. We can hope that from a new downtown, that it will radiate out and Jackson will once again be a place that we can be proud to call our capitol city.

Denver revitalised a lot of its downtown not so long ago, it would be so nice if Jackson could do the same.

I would love it, I never saw it in its heyday, it has always been a place for fear...

Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope the reconstruction adds character and revitalises the city, so many revitalisations do exactly the opposite just ending up with soulless highrise.

Jackson is not known for highrises... thankfully they are using the buildings already there. :-) I look forward to visiting your blog more.

It's great when older areas are revitalised, makes the town so much more livable - in a socially harmonious way. Not like what I hear they did to the Austin Blues district - but haven't been there so don't know.

I hope you are right. Tough time to be doing any redevelopment, however.

I'm not sure where all the money is coming from. I do not that Duce McAllister was a large part of the King Edward rebirth. And I also know that despite the recession Mississippi has continued to grow, I guess that is a benefit of being a poorer state, you are not as hard hit.

It's great when cities revitalise and restore their historic precincts.
