Calm Seas

I had thought I would retire this blog. In light of recent events, I feel it may be time to step it out of retirement and return to something more quaint.  Perhaps even hopeful.

Underneath It All

Walking along the Blackwater River in Milton, FL you cross underneath the US90 Bridge.   This is the side that you don’t always see on bridges that cross water, we tend to keep to the top side of those.   However I love the perspective it offers, a glimpse of something different.

Electric Blue

As the storms rage in your heart the thunder echoes in your voice the electric blue of the lightning reflects through your eyes.

These images were captured with my Blackberry Curve… yes… with my phone.   I have not edited these images as I occasionally do.   I took them tonight as I walked west along Panama City Beach.  The storms raging in the distance towards Seaside and Destin were bathing my world in a beautiful occasional splash of Electric Blue.

Lady Louise

Ships and boats fascinate me perhaps only second to airplanes.  This particular beauty was docked in Apalachicola, FL.   I loved her name, the “Lady Louise,”   while I am sure she was named for a famous “Louise”   such as Lady Louise Windsor; however, Louise is a name often repeated among women in my family…  so I immediately associated it with them.

Beat Still

The wind off the water blows through the trees,
Beat still my heart for we know what is to come.
I sit in the warmth of the sun with the birds flying free,
Beat still my heart for we are waiting for none.
I watch the crabs scurry at the waters edge,
Beat still my heart for you may very well break.
The waves lap at the waters edge enticing,
Beat still my heart for you are not weak.
I see the water stretch as far as the eye can see,
Beat still my heart we will soon be free.
I listen to the sound of the wind in the moss,
Beat still my heart we will know not loss.
Beat still.
Beat still.

Basking

Pelicans rest after a long day of foraging for food in the wild areas of Florida.   They overlook Saint Andrews Bay from a pier silently basking in the evening sun.  Sometimes I feel like one of these pelicans, no matter what I may go at life alone… I am never really alone.   When it is time for me to bask in the sun and reflect, I will do so with those closest to me.

F is for....

FOUNTAIN. This beautiful fountain featuring playful cherubs is in Natchez, Mississippi. One of the oldest cities in Mississippi, it was founded in 1716 by the French. Natchez then went on to serve as the capitol for many countries and colonies before finally becoming part of Mississippi. Spared from damage in the Civil War, the city is a jewel in the south, with many historical buildings and homes still existing. Natchez is possibly the only surviving southern belle.

Scheme of Things

There are moments where we are suddenly snapped to the realization that we are small in the scheme of things, and no matter how massive we are in our own world… overall it’s not that much. I got this when I saw this couple staring at the barges along the Mississippi River in Vicksburg, MS… The size of the river, and the boats, set against the couple in a loving almost futile embrace of protection against the evils of the world, inspired the above thought.

Katrina Ruins

Water is one of the most magickal elements on earth. It exists in such a wonderful abundance, and it is where all like sprang forth unto the land. However it is also a destructor, it can take just as many lives. Mississippi has seen more than it’s share of death and destruction from water, Hurricane Katrina being one of them. There are still Hurricane Ruins on the Mississippi coast, and elsewhere. This is the remains of the Presidents Casino, just ruins along the beach, it stands as a testament to the destructive power that is water.

Water may destroy, but from that destruction comes new life… it is this that we need to nourish after such events. Hope can never fail, we must never allow that. There are still people on the Mississippi Coast without permanent homes post-Katrina, if you would like to help visit AdoptaKatrinaFamily.org.

This Post was a Retro-Thursday post on 8-25-11.

Constant Companion

Over a year ago, I decided to do something that I never thought I would do… Get a tattoo. I spent time looking at many designs and variations before I decided on what I wanted. At the time I knew I wanted a tribal design, but I was not sure from there what exactly I wanted. The frog is my favourite animal, I knew this, it is also my Native American totem, which is when it became obvious… I wanted a tribal frog. I then searched many places for a design I liked, and doing a random online Google Image search (Tribal Frog) I found the one below. I immediately fell in love with it, and saved it with a few other designs I had found. For six months I looked at it, trying to decide if I really wanted to go through with the process. During that time I looked at more designs, and I would delete ones in the folder that I no longer liked, soon just one remained.

I talked with a few friends about where to put it, and after much deliberation on my two requirements, (I wanted to be able to see it and I needed to be able to cover it if necessary) I decided on the top of my foot. Then on 1 May, 2009 I was riding around with my friend Jessica, and I mentioned to her my plans, and since I was present for her first tattoo, she and I decided to go get it… and we did.

Since then I have looked at the Tattoo as a visual representation of my Native American Spirit Totem, and it has become sort of a companion to me. I am really pleased with the design and I am very happy to show it off. The only thing I regret is that when I saved the image the first time, I did not think to mark the site or see who the artist I was… and I have never been able to find it again.
